Bangalore fort : The name Bangalore stems from Bengaluru, in a reference to it in a Ganga inscription, circa 890 AD., found near the Begur temple, Begur. Kempegouda, a feudatory of the Vijayanagar empire, built and fortified the city in 1537 AD., and gave it its name. The city was leased to the Mysore King Chikkadevaraya by the Mughals, in 1689 AD. He expanded the existing fort to the South and built the Sri Venkataramana temple within its boundaries.

Hyder Ali secured Bengaluru as Jair in 1758, further expanded, and strengthened it by 1761 AD. Lord Cornwallis captured the fortified city in 1791 AD., but handed it back to Tipu Sultan a year later as per the Srirangapattana Treaty.

The original fort was oval in plan, with round bastions and huge gateways at important places Delhi Bagilu (Gate) and Yelahanka Bagilu in the North, Ulsur Bagilu in the East, Kanakanahali Bagilu and Mysore Bagilu in the South and Kengeri Bagilu in the West. Remnants of these are still in existence. It was surrounded by a dry moat. Only this part of the fort now remains intact, consisting of a dungeon and a small Ganesha temple. The three successive gateways here, linked the Royal enclosure to the civilian area. The granite walls are sloping with beautiful stucco carvings. A tablet embedded on the wall indicates that this was where Lord Cornwallis breached the fort, when he took possession of it.

The dungeon bears witness to the confinement of Sir David Baird and other Englishmen, prior to 1785 AD., on a tablet placed there.

There is no entry fee. One can cover it within 30 min. What you can do? You can simply go, take some beautiful angle of the architecture, sit and take some rest. That’s all.

Now a days Victoria hospital and govt dental college come under this area. There are paid parking slot if you are visiting by private car. Local city buses are easily available to visit this place. You have to get down in KR market. Btw this market is very much well known in Bengaluru.

Tipu Sultan's summer palace: The extraordinary wooden palace was being start constructed by Hyder Ali and completed during the time of Tipu Sultan in 1791. This palace was constructed as a court and Tipu Sultan used to conduct it from the east and west side balcony. It looks like one storey from outside but once you step in you will be amazed to find out that is actually two storeys building. The symmetrical building has two hanging small balconies inside in front and back which face East and West respectively and another one is outside which faces North. There are four small rooms in four corners inside the building. The chocolate and golden colour combination makes an rich contrast and are useful for photography. The wooden decorations and floral painted walls amaze anyone by sight. The pillars inside the buildings are amazing and no matter how sunny the day is, you will feel so chilled inside..

One thing to remember that you cannot buy tickets by cash, you have to get it online by scanning QR code displayed in the palace gate. So make sure you have online payment facilities in your phone. Currently ticket price is 30 rs. It is necessary to mention this campus is pretty much maintained and it has water cooler and clean toilet facilities inside..

Sri Venkataramana Temple where Tipu used to visit regularly is located next to the Summer Palace. Once you visit the palace, don’t miss to visit the temple. Temple will be open from 8 to 12 in the morning and 6 to 8:30 in the evening.
