More Information:	Kasimedu Fishing Harbour, also known as Royapuram Fishing Harbour or Chennai Fishing Harbour, is a vital maritime hub located in the Royapuram area of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Situated just north of the Chennai Port, this harbour plays a significant role in the city's fishing industry and cultural heritage. Overview and Significance Established in 1975 under the guidance of former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran, the harbour was developed to enhance the livelihoods of local fishermen. It became operational in 1984 and has since evolved into one of Chennai's primary fishing centers. The harbour accommodates a diverse fleet, including over 1,000 mechanized boats and numerous traditional catamarans. Infrastructure and Operations Capacity: Originally designed to berth 575 boats, the harbour now supports over 1,395 vessels, reflecting its growing importance. Facilities: The harbour includes a 300-meter breakwater, auction halls, and a retail fish market with 90 stalls. It also serves as a shipbuilding facility, primarily constructing fishing boats. Fish Market: Kasimedu's fish market is renowned for its wide variety of seafood, including seer, pomfret, prawn, shark, sardine, crab, silverbellies, carangids, and mackerel. Approximately 200 tonnes of fish are brought in daily, with 30% distributed to other states like Karnataka and Kerala. Historical and Cultural Context The area now known as Kasimedu has a rich history. In 1799, during the East India Company's rule, fishing communities migrated here from Chepauk village. The name 'Kasimedu' is believed to derive from the Kasi Vishwanathan Temple, whose gopuram was visible from the shore until about 15 years ago, and 'medu,' meaning mound or elevated land in Tamil. Challenges and Developments 2004 Tsunami: The harbour suffered extensive damage during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, resulting in the destruction of about 61 trawlers and damage to many others. Modernization Efforts: In recent years, the harbour has undergone modernization to improve facilities, including the construction of new wharfs, finger jetties, and repair centers, aiming to meet international standards.
